Last week, one of my newer friends asked me about Christmas. Knowing I’m not a Christian, he wondered if I celebrated anything at this time of year. That’s not a simple yes/no question for me.

It’s true that I’m not a believer in any deity, but I like a good celebration as much as the next girl. If I celebrate anything, it would be the changing of the seasons, though “celebrate” is a bit of a stretch. I acknowledge the winter solstice as a time of change (as I do the summer solstice and both equinoxes).

This time of year is one where people are supposed to be kinder to each other, I guess. I’ve never really understood that. It seems to assume that it’s difficult to be kind to people at other times of the year. It’s not. Being kind is easy and costs nothing.

I love giving presents to people and do so year-round. But yes, I do it more now than at other times of year. I see nothing wrong with playing along with all that.

And it shouldn’t need to be said, but:

• There is no “War on Christmas.” Honest.
• I will not be offended if you wish me a Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays.
• Call it a Christmas Tree. No one really cares one way or another.
