Invictus

Art by Christina Cartwright

Birth Name

Marius Noble

Born

August 1, 1958

Abilities

Invictus is quite strong, but – lacking the physical toughness of many of his peers – must protect himself with body armor. His more valuable skill, however, is having a head for leadership and tactical strategy.

Affiliations

The Gatekeepers, 1980-Present

Biography

A San Francisco native, Invictus was a founding member of The Gatekeepers, joining at the age of 21. Within fifteen years, he was elected the leader of the team, a position he has held ever since. In 2001, Supers magazine named him “Super of the Year.”

Personality

Invictus, being the leader of the most prestigious team of metas on the West Coast, is every bit as professional as one would expect. He is regarded as a stern, no-nonsense man with little time or patience for those who step out of line. At the same time, he is more understanding and accepting of others than people tend to believe.

Excerpt from Redemption

The first step in that process was to make sure no criminal charges were forthcoming. To determine that, I went to the one person I knew who could find that out in a hurry.

“I can – and will – find out for you,” Invictus said. Then, with a tilt of his head, he said, “I admit I’m curious about your continued interest in the girl.”

I considered my response carefully. “I suppose the primary reason is that she reminds me of myself. She’s been through some terrible things and I want to help her. And I hate the idea of her being stuck in there.”

“And the secondary reason?”

I smiled weakly. “I suppose I’m hoping that helping her deal with her guilt will help me with my own.”

Invictus nodded in understanding, then said, “I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything.” I thanked him and turned to leave. “Dyna,” he said, and I turned back. “I’m impressed by your dedication to her.”

“Kind of you to say,” I said.

“But,” he continued, “remember, we’re not social workers.”

I chuckled. “Had to go and ruin the moment, didn’t you?”

To my surprise, he smiled faintly and shrugged. “It’s my way.”
