Biography

Sinta was born with cat-like features, including her ears, eyes, claws, and tail. When she was two years old, she was left at the door of a hospital, bleeding profusely. Her tail had been chopped off. As it was the same hospital in which she’d been born, one of the staff recognized her. Looking up her birth records, she found the girl’s parents’ names and notified the police. Her parents resisted arrest and attacked the arresting officers. Both were killed in the altercation. Sinta was placed into the custody of the state.

Over the years, she went from foster home to foster home, meeting with ridicule and torment at all turns, both from the foster families and the children in the various schools she attended. When she was 11 years old, a foster father whipped her with the blade of a chainsaw. Sinta retaliated, this time, raking his face with her claws, and running away.

For the following year, she lived on the streets, until one night, as she stopped a purse-snatcher, she caught the attention of one of the city’s metas. He, in turn, introduced her to Scoutmaster, who took her in as part of his team and gave her a place to live.

Sinta worked as a free agent after the Bay Scouts disbanded, but was a founding member of the Pariah Project in 2009. She volunteers her time with the San Francisco Child Abuse Prevention Center.

Personality

Despite the horrible childhood abuse she endured, Sinta is a kind-hearted and warm person. She loves to laugh and seems younger than her age, largely because of her playful behavior.

Excerpt from Reckoning

Sinta smiled and bowed politely to me. But when she raised her head, her face was stern and her pupils wide. A moment later, she pounced.

She hit me like a linebacker, knocking the wind out of me. She was slight, but it was all muscle. We slammed to the ground, Sinta on top of me, hands drawing back to strike. That’s when I noticed the claws where fingernails should have been.

They flashed downward and I could feel them “catch” in my shield. The next blow did the same, and I wondered what would happen with repeated blows to the same spot. Would my protection falter? I wasn’t eager to find out.

I shoved and Sinta sailed backward, executing a perfect flip to land gracefully and immediately shot into another charge. I readied a power punch to deliver before she struck. But this was a child, I told myself. I didn’t want to hurt her. I let the energy drain from my fist.

Not that it mattered. Sinta landed in front of me and bounced into a judo kick to my stomach. As I doubled over, she pummeled on the back of my head. Disoriented, I jumped backward. My vision cleared as I hit the ground, stumbling slightly. I was shocked to see I’d somehow jumped about fifteen feet. I didn’t have long to absorb that, since Sinta was halfway across that distance to me. This time, I didn’t hold back. As she neared, I rushed forward and landed a solid blow that slammed her into the ground.

As she rose, Scoutmaster yelled, “Stop!”

Sinta immediately relaxed and smiled up at me. “Good hit!” she said, rubbing her head.

I didn’t know whether to thank her or apologize.
